PART 2 I called 911 from my kitchen floor with my mother wrapped in my coat. The paramedics said her body temperature was dangerously low. Her feet had early frostbite. She was dehydrated and underweight. At the hospital, the emergency doctor looked at the bruise on her cheek and the older bruises on her arms. Then he called a social worker. The social worker called Adult Protective Services.
PART 2 Mr. Tolliver pressed play. Mrs. Whitlow appeared on the screen, sitting in her own living room, in her blue cardigan. Her hair was brushed. Her eyes were sharp. “My name is Agatha Whitlow,” she said clearly. “Today is January 18th. My doctor is sitting next to me. He examined me this morning and will tell you I am of sound mind.”
PART 2 I called the number back. It went straight to voicemail. The sheriff’s dispatcher was still on my other line. I told her everything. The adoption decree. The terminated rights. The smell. The locked doors. “Sir,” she said, “a possible meth lab with a child inside is our highest priority. Units are on the way. Do not go out there yourself.”
PART 2 “Mom,” I said quietly. “Where is Julia’s real ring?” My mother stood up from the table. Her chin was shaking. “I was going to buy it back,” she said. “I swear, I was going to buy it back.”
PART 2 I pulled Cooper’s car seat against my body and stepped back. Deputy Vasquez stepped between us. “Sir, nobody is taking that baby anywhere right now.”
FULL STORY: My son put me in a nursing home and moved his family into my house. But one week later, I walked through my front door with my lawyer and the deed in my hand. I looked at them and said, “Pack your bags. You’re leaving today.”
