adventure and explore the beauty of nature’s best…
In the
WOODS.
PART 2 “Birdie” was what my father called me. He was a sergeant in the Army. He left for Vietnam when I was twelve. He never came home.
PART 2 “No,” I said through the door. “It’s Molly. His wife.” Silence.
PART 2 Piper stared at the woman on our porch. Then she said, very quietly, “Aunt Laurel?”
PART 2 “The adoption papers,” Renee said. “The ones that say she isn’t yours anymore.” My knees almost gave out on that terrace. “I never signed anything.”
PART 2 Mallory didn’t answer the phone. She didn’t have to. In the galley, Denise heard the voicemail greeting.
PART 2 The note said: Isaiah, I’m going in for one more double shift. Back by breakfast. Wash Joy’s blanket so it smells like home. Love you both to the moon. —Mama
