For His Birthday, I Showed Up Unannounced At My Firefighter Husband’s Station — Then What His Captain Told Me Made My Stomach Drop

My name is Amanda, and my husband Tyler has been a firefighter for nine years, working the kind of schedule where birthdays sometimes get celebrated a day late or squeezed in between shifts.
This year, I decided I wasn’t doing that anymore. His birthday landed right in the middle of a 24-hour shift, so I planned a surprise instead: I picked up a dozen balloons, a small cake from his favorite bakery, and drove straight to the station during what I knew was their downtime between calls.
I’d done this once before, years ago, and the guys had practically thrown a parade. Tyler had been so embarrassed and so happy at the same time.
I parked out front, balloons bouncing against the roof of my car, and walked up to the bay doors with the cake balanced carefully in both hands.
Nobody smiled.
That was the first thing I noticed, before I even said a word. A few of the guys looked up, then looked at each other, then looked away from me entirely, like they were waiting for someone else to speak first.
“Is Tyler around?” I asked, still holding the cake, my voice already sounding smaller than I meant it to.
Captain Reyes came out from the back office, slowly, his expression doing something I’d never seen it do before.
He looked at the balloons in my hand, then at my face.
